In The Tradgedy of Hamlet, the plot line is centered around revenge and Hamlet's moral decisions. Whil watchineg the film adaptations, we were able to come up with our theories about whether or not his ethical decisions were justified and how we thought he would deal with his internal struggles. Both films clearly showed that the moves he was going to make to attain the revenge was in his own hands and the outcome of all the conflicts would be determined by his actions. Sometimes however, our fate seems already lined up, for us, as if it was predetermined by someone else. After analyzing both films and comparing it to the book, our lingering questions were: Did Hamlet really have control over his fate, or was his role as the tragic hero make his fate preordained?
Being the tragic hero, Hamlet's fate was predetermined. Had Hamlet been a real person though, his fate obviously could have been different. As some say, "you can't choose the cards you are dealt but you can choose how you play them".

ReplyDeleteFate is a huge factor in the lives of fictional characters. Film adaptations portray fate differently than books. Both film adaptations show Hamlet's struggle with the choice of whether or not to avenge his father's death by killing his uncle. Hamlet appears to have a choice but when circumstances change does he really? The way the ghost is portrayed in the films has some bearing. In the classic version, the ghost in imperial and cold to Hamlet, giving him orders like a guard. In the modern adaptation set in New York, the ghost comes down to hamlet's level and they appear to love each other. At the end of the scene they embrace. Hamlet's life seems to continually be out of his control. His fate is determined by outside forces such as his father's ghost, Claudius's plots and almost everyone's spying. Fate is when someone or something else's actions determine the outcome of a portion of the subject's life. how often does Hamlet take the initiative in his own life? How does this affect others? What other characters seem to play a supporting role in their own lives?
Hamlet's fate was chosen for him, since he was the tragic hero. Usually you are able to change fate but when Shakespeare wrote this as a tragedy he had already set the outcome for Hamlet before the outcome had taken place.
ReplyDeleteHamlet was the tragic hero so as the reader we already know that Hamlet's fate was set up for him. In stories the author can already have the fate of each character in mind but in real life you determine your fate.
ReplyDeleteHamlet's future was predetermined. All tragic heroes have a flaw that leads to their demise. I think everyone's fate in predetermined. Hamlet's death was not a surprise, Shakespeare knew exactly what he wanted to happen.
ReplyDeleteI think what you do makes you a tragic hero not being a tragic hero makes you do what you do. Of course we will never know if what we do is actually us or if we are secretly just puppets in a show designed by fate for its own amusement.
ReplyDeleteI feel not only Hamlet's future was predetermined but Hamlet himself thinks everyones fate is predetermined. I think he views that or any event, or in this case characteristic, that exists and can not alter any fate. It is even suggested with the quote in Hamlet, "Divinity that shapes our end."
ReplyDeleteHis fate was predetermined as the tragic hero.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Hamlet's fate was predetermined as the tragic hero because from the moment he heard word of his father's murder, Hamlet was thrust into the role of the avenger with little choice and was later led to his untimely death.
ReplyDeleteBeing define as a tragic hero, Hamlets destiny is predetermined. Yet, it is the journey that he take to reach his ending that is left to him. Hamlet was going to die, but it was his decision whether to kill his Uncle or let his Uncle kill him.
ReplyDeleteAs said, the definition of tragic hero itself states that Hamlet will have a tragic flaw that leads to a catastrophe. That being said, he didn't have to do anything specific. He chose the path he used to get to the end.
ReplyDeleteIn playing the part of a tragic hero within the novel, Hamlet's fate is predetermined to fit the role. His tragic flaw provokes the course that his character must take and ultimately, where it must end. If Hamlet were a character in another type of novel or a real person, his fate would be determined by the choices he had made up until that point and not a predetermined event.
ReplyDeleteHamlet's fate was predetermined due to being a tragic hero. I think there was a lot of variables in the way he could have met his fate but regardless of how, being a tragic hero means he had to die.
